Harmony Tips and Tricks: Controlling Your PLAYSTATION 3 With a Harmony Remote

Many people with a Logitech Harmony remote own a Sony PLAYSTATION 3 and use it as a Blu-Ray player for the fantastic HD experience. Unfortunately, the PS3 does not come equipped with an IR sensor so that it can be controlled with a universal remote. Needing to use the Sony BD remote defeats the whole purpose of controlling everything with a single Harmony remote.

In May 2009, we released the Logitech Harmony Adapter for PLAYSTATION 3 which when used with any Harmony remote, allows you to control your movie-watching experience on PS3. It will also turn the PS3 on and off – and allow you to set up your Harmony activities to include the PS3 just as you would any other device. You also won’t need to dedicate any of your valuable USB ports to get that control.

To start controlling your PS3 with your Harmony remote you simply add the game console to your Harmony account, and then pair the Harmony adapter to your PS3. Once paired the adapter takes an infrared (IR) signal from your Harmony remote, and then transmits a Bluetooth wireless signal that commands the PS3.

Getting the Logitech Harmony Adapter for PLAYSTATION 3 is probably the last piece of the puzzle to get complete control over your AV equipment with a single remote. It makes the entire experience of switching from ‘Watch TV’ to ‘Watch a Blu-ray’ on a PS3 with a Harmony that much easier for everyone.

  • I have one of these and everything works fine, except for powering off. TV and A/V receiver get turned off, but the PS3 stays powered on.

    • Hello MoSH,

The are usually two different things that can cause a Harmony Adapter to not power off a PS3. First one being that you have a Playstation 3 from Asia which requires a different confirm command (X rather than O). In this case just remove the device from your Harmony account and add in a “Playstation 3 (AP)” model number.

The second case is mainly a speed settings or delay issue within your Harmony account. Increase the Inter-Device Delay on your PS3 on the Device pages of your account. Update and try it out.

  • Is there a diagram anywhere that shows the mapping of buttons from a PS3 controller to a Harmony 300?

    • Hello JLyon1515

There is not any diagram that I know of, but for the most part all of your numbers, transport keys (play, pause, & fast forward etc), color and directional buttons will be easily auto mapped.

The few others you can customize yourself such as the Square, Circle, Triangle & Cross can go on the Menu, Guide, Info, and Exit or up to the personalized buttons 1-5 along the top.

  • I have my PS3 connected to my TV via Denon A/V receiver, everything works fine but the adapter does not power ON my PS3; all my other components (TV, A/V) power on fine.

I have to manually power ON the PS3 and then I can control my PS3 with Harmony 900 remote.

Anyone else have the same problem, I did see a post about not powering OFF, is it the same issue with powering ON

    • Hi Naresh,

The only time I’ve encountered people having an issue with powering the PS3 on, is when they are plugging in the Harmony Adapter or the PS3 into another device (such as an AV Receiver) or a power bar that doesn’t allow devices to be in standby mode. In these two cases the reason it doesn’t turn on, is the IR signal from the Harmony remote is sent when the PS3 or adapter haven’t even finished booting up.

If neither of those affect you, then I would urge you to contact support to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Dane, any idea why a programmed Start button doesn’t work in games (usually needed to get past the title screen)? Every other button works fine but this one. I’ve asked customer support how to program explicit IR codes but am getting the runaround.

  • Hello Felix,

It’s disappointing to hear of the runaround, and I will look into the issue for you. As I am unsure myself if the ‘Start’ button will work within the title screen of games, I will try with the original Sony BD remote. Since if the original Sony BD remote won’t get past those screens, then the Harmony cannot either as we are just mimicking the functionality of the original remote. I’ll keep you posted.

    Dane

    • I’ve tested the original Sony BD Remote & the Harmony Adapter for PS3 and both are sending the ‘Start’ command when I’m within a game.

As long as you have the ‘Start’ IR command customized somewhere to a button or LCD screen soft button then you should be able to use it as the original Sony BD remote.

      Best regards,

  • I don’t know if this was posted once before:

    hi

I am thinking of buying a harmony 300i and a PS3 adapter, so does anybody know if the harmony 300i works with playtv for PS3.It would be nice if i did because i’m using it for my main TV tuner

    best regards
    Peter

    • Hi Peter,

Yes, if you purchase the Logitech Harmony Adapter for PS3 then you are able to control the PS3 & PlayTV with any Harmony remote including the Harmony 300i.

The PlayTV allows you to use the PS3’s SIXAXIS™ wireless controller or the BD remote control. Since we mimic all the commands of the BD remote, you will be able to get the same control as you would if you used Sony’s original remote.

      Best,
      Dane

  • love the harmony ps3 adaptor works great apart from not able to use the ps3 toggle sticks to navigate the cursor on iplayer and other video apps.
you can use the direction buttons to jump from selection to selection but is there any way that you can map the toggles to the harmony one for 360 degree cursor movement.
