Talking Face to Face with Gmail Voice and Video Chat

Logitech has always believed that voice and video communications are a natural extension of e-mail and instant messaging, providing for richer, real-time communication. Today, Google announced the addition of voice and video chat to their popular Gmail service. With Gmail voice and video chat, people can chat in high-quality video for free right from within Gmail. All you need is a webcam (Logitech ones work great!) and a free plugin that downloads in seconds.

At the bottom of the Gmail chat window, there is a new “Video & more” link that opens options to “video chat” or “voice chat.” Clicking on one of these links will ring the contact and the chat will be connected when they accept. You can pop out and change the size of the video chat window or go full screen.

So next time you log into Gmail, have a video chat instead of sending an e-mail to keep in touch with your friends and family.

  • I just got the Qick Pro 9000 and was attempting to chat with another Gmailer. He said the audio was delayed about 4 seconds form the video. Any help?

  • Hi Dave,

We’ve let Google know about the issue you are having. They have suggested closing all applications that use audio when you are having a call as a workaround to see if that will help. It may be related to an audio card limitation but the issue is still under investigation.

  • Excited about gmail video, looks like it will be great. However my Logitech QuickCam Fusion refuses to work with it. Works with everything else. Updated driver (5/11/07) and uninstalled and reinstalled gmail plug-in. “Verify Settings” recognizes QuickCam but no picture. QuickCam microphone works fine.

  • I’ve just bought a logitech quickcam messenger and have spent all evening trying to get it to work with Gmail video chat. I can see my friends image but can’t hear her nor can I see my own image; she can see her own image but not mine, though she can hear me. I’ve installed and reinstalled the drivers, and the gmail download, several times. Any thoughts before I return it and try something else.

    • Hi Rod,

It looks like some of your settings are off. I would guess that the friend\’s settings are correct, so we just need to adjust yours.

      1. Log into your Gmail account.
      2. Click on Settings (at the top right of your browser window).
      3. Within Settings, click on Chat and then on the Verify your settings link.

I suspect that the camera selection and speaker selections need to be changed away from the default.

      Hope this helps,
      Gina

  • Hi Gina,
I downloaded everything successfully and I was able to have a video chat with a gmail friend. I could see him, but he couldn’t see me. My webcam light is on but nothing is seen??
I’ve looked everywhere for help but to no avail. Can you help me?

  • I set up my Mom with the quickcam deluxe for notebooks and Gmail account with video. We can hear her voice, but no video. Any suggestions?? Please help. Her grandkids want to chat. Thanks

    • Hi Don,

Take a look at the suggestions I made for Rod and Dayna. Please let me know if you are unable to resolve the issue.

  • Gina,

Just wanted to let you know that your suggestions worked. Also, let other users know that they should not turn on the webcam software before using the gmail vid chat. Just plug in, goto gmail, set up gmail video download and go. use the Verify settings to ensure the cam is detected.

    Thanks

  • Hello
I am mega frustrated. Been happy with Quickcam for Notebooks Deluxe for a year until I up-dated Microsft WIndows Explorer and Live last week. Sincethen, cam is inoprative. Soke to someone on your team who sggested a solution which was not feasible when tried. Have spent hours with help of techy frind trying to sort it and now am concluding my cam is obsolete. Are you talking to Microsft about compatability issues. Where can I go where it will not cost me to sort this out?

  • Hi,

Everytime I try to verify settings with the logitech cam, browsers freeze up and close. have you heard of any conflicts that may make this occur?

  • i have video affects on my webcam and stuff but when i want to play them it won’t let me click on them. i dont know what to do.

    • Hi Molly,

Like I recommended to David, I would contact customer support to help with troubleshooting (www.logitech.com/support).

      Cheers, Gina

  • What should I do if the video from my QuickCam Deluxe for Notebooks is not being detected through GMail?

  • Hi Rob,

My guess is that you need to adjust your Gmail settings, but I’ll leave it to Google’s support to confirm. You should get in touch with them.

    Cheers, Gina

  • Hi Gina,

I’ve installed my webcam, but every time I try to install Gmail voice/video chat, it shuts down. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do?
