Logitech Revue with Google TV Will Get Android 3.1 (Honeycomb), Plus Android Market this Summer

Filed: Digital Home, News and Announcements

Although mentioned only briefly at the Google I/O conference, the news of Google TV getting Android 3.1 (Honeycomb) is important for the Google TV platform – developers will soon be able to develop apps for tablets and Google TV using the same SDK.

I wanted to let you know that all Logitech Revue boxes will automatically get this over-the-air update when it becomes available later this summer. And more good news – this update will also include the Andriod Market being made available for Google TV.

We are excited about what lies ahead for Google TV and we hope you are too.

I am an early adopter of Google TV and its THE most important element in my home entertainment setup.

Do you have an Alpha or Beta testing program for the upcoming 3.1 upgrade? I would love to participate in any such program, to help the platform in any way possible.

Subhankar,
We aren’t looking for alpha or beta testers at this time but we appreciate your passion around the Logitech Revue.

Evulm0nkey | May 11th, 2011 at 07:59

Is there any way that somebody at Logitech can confirm a target date?

JoshP | May 11th, 2011 at 08:16

an can you comment on when Google TV will be available outside of the US? Specifically, Canada.

Ashish Arora | May 13th, 2011 at 15:47

JoshP,
We can not provide an update on availability of the Logitech Revue outside of the U.S

Stephen | May 11th, 2011 at 14:09

Is there a time-table for this update?

Ashish Arora | May 13th, 2011 at 15:46

Stephen and Evulm0nkey,
We can not provide any specific date beyond that it will be later this summer.

Sweet! Thanks the for news!!!

Matt | May 14th, 2011 at 16:32

Looking forward to this great update!

Tiago | May 14th, 2011 at 16:50

Thank you so much for the great news! Honeycomb 3.1 will make my Google TV much more fun than it already is! Another Honeycomb device without spending any more cash! :D

Steve Koretsky | May 15th, 2011 at 14:48

This is great news Ashish. As an early adopter of GTV/Revue I’m already impressed with the current functionality of GTV, and tremendous potential of this platform for consumer cloud-based services on Android Honeycomb going forward. Keep up the good work!

Two things the Revue needs — an Amazon Instant Video app like the Netflix player has, and surround sound for both of those streaming services. Roku has the edge in this regard.

Lupe | May 23rd, 2011 at 11:50

Can’t wait for Honeycomb 3.1 and the Android Market to be updated to my Google TV, great work Ashish. This is going to make my summer! Thanks

kris | May 23rd, 2011 at 20:16

The revue has both amazon and surround sound

Wadya | May 27th, 2011 at 09:12

Google TV needs to open up and allow Android Market on their device OS. Currently Apps are all oriented towards watching TV programs, Watching Web Videos and some Web browsing. Opening up more for Gaming and Productivity Apps will help promoting Google TV more.

Ashish Arora | May 27th, 2011 at 16:29

We couldn’t agree more and are excited about the Android Market coming to Google TV this year.

Karl | May 27th, 2011 at 14:20

We love our Logitech Revue and Google TV. What will Honeycomb bring to the picture (pun intended)?

We have iPhones so we don’t know anything about Android.

Thanks!

Ashish Arora | May 27th, 2011 at 16:28

Basically, Honeycomb will allow developers to design and build apps for the Google TV platform. And with all of the space a big screen can offer, we can’t wait to see what apps they will be developing!

Andrew | May 29th, 2011 at 08:38

I am also an early adopter of the Logitech Revue. My biggest concern is, due to Google’s slow implementation of a Google TV Market, that by the time this device gets a chance to experience what Google TV can really do, Logitech will be releasing some sort of more capable “Revue 2″ to coincide with Android 3.1 and the newly available market.

I guess my real question is, what are the plans for future Google TV devices from Logitech at this point, and will such a device leave early adopters out in the cold?

James | June 2nd, 2011 at 10:59

I bought the Revue for Christmas and am happy with it but…. Ummm. Possibly a bit more specific… June, July or August??? Early or Late summer?

DOuG pRATt | June 2nd, 2011 at 12:22

Kris – The Revue has Amazon Instant Video through Chrome, but there isn’t an app like the one for Netflix Watch Instantly. Surround sound on the Revue works with my FiOS DVR as a source, but not with Amazon Instant Video or Netflix Watch Instantly (note: I use an optical cable going to the receiver).

Edgar | June 2nd, 2011 at 17:06

This is going to be the start of something great with Honeycomb. I can’t wait to see what kind of apps will be developed for the TV.

Vasu Inukollu | June 13th, 2011 at 03:32

Thanks for the news. Any further details on the availability will greatly help the early adopters like me.

Vikas Hassuen | June 20th, 2011 at 11:26

When is the release date for the update?

We want it!!!!!!!!!!

Scott Schwartz | June 30th, 2011 at 07:45

I certainly hope that this update comes with either an improved Logitech Media Player or at least the opportunity to use other video players (VLC anyone)? The small number of supported formats has been a serious drawback to the Revue to date.

Rick Backer | July 2nd, 2011 at 12:37

I got Revue the first day it was out and still waiting for it to work as advertised
maybe this update will come close to what was promised.
this update and the chance of Google purchasing hulu just might make this product work like it was advertised

would Logitech really leaves the ones that trusted in logitech’s good name and got this on the first day behind ?

TGA_Xaneth | July 8th, 2011 at 17:59

I have asked about this repeatedly on the forums with ABSOLUTELY NO ANSWERS. This is the reason I bought the Revue in the first place, and I have been greatly disappointed since. Not at all the “open” experience I was expecting.

Ashish Arora | July 11th, 2011 at 11:10

Google TV will get the Honeycomb update, which will include the Andriod Market, later this summer.

Michael | July 13th, 2011 at 15:09

Ashish, does Logitech plan on releasing another Google TV product like the Revue or a newer Revue? If so, when approximately? Thanks.

Carlyle070 | July 14th, 2011 at 08:39

Can you or somebody at Logitech with answers address the question: ” does Logitech plan on releasing another Google TV product like the Revue or a newer Revue? If so, when approximately?”

Thank you

Ashish Arora | July 14th, 2011 at 10:08

Hi Carlyle070 and Michael,
We can not discuss plans for future products. But stay tuned for the Google TV software update later this summer.

rosco | July 18th, 2011 at 19:28

with new updates and through the market is there the possibility of having the revue be able to pass dolby digital thru hdmi or is this a hardware limitation?

myles | July 22nd, 2011 at 10:33

when is it coming out ???
and what will i have

Assem Allah Lickem | July 25th, 2011 at 10:26

This is lie!!! Update not come.

Why they do this to our people?

When update is come?

Skrillet | July 26th, 2011 at 09:51

I was wondering if there are any hints on possible ETA of Honeycomb and the marketplace for the Google TV. The summer and Q3 both end in September. Is it going to be around then?

Inous | August 1st, 2011 at 05:04

Will Google TV have a hulu app available with the 3.1 update?

dennis camberos | August 1st, 2011 at 11:39

Hey summer is almost over ,what is taking Logitec so long ? Release honeycomb already ,man I hate when they announce something n they take their sweet talk ,why even announce it

Sumit | August 1st, 2011 at 19:49

Hi,

I think what Android lacks is an Airplay like feature. People can stream Pandora, Vevo, Youtube directly from iPhone; almost negating the need for a keyboard and apps on the TV itself. Also, people can stream their personal content (music, movies, photos) via Airplay with a click of a button.

Is there an Airplay alternative in Revue?

Thanks,
Sumit

MishasNet | August 2nd, 2011 at 00:24

Will we be able to install Skype, ones we have access to Android Market, with new Honeycomb?

Hari | August 4th, 2011 at 13:40

I read all your responses regarding the date of update. All you said was end of summer 2011. Sep 22 is the official end of summer in US. If you do not have an update by then, I expect full refund from Logitech for a product not delivering as promised. I know that I will not be alone in that expectation.

I ordered a Logitech Revue through only because you announced that Honeycomb 3.1 will be available.

Russell | August 7th, 2011 at 09:10

Well…. only a few days left of summer…. any news?

MACJR | August 8th, 2011 at 14:46

Uhm…. well “will be released later this summer.” I hope they mean summer 2011 because there are only 6 weeks left. It’s about as late in the summer as you can get.

I enjoy my Revue, so much so that I’ve bought two more as gifts for my parents. Nonetheless, these rumor based marketing strategies are horrible. “Later this summer” is almost as ambiguous as “some day”. Please officially give a date, even if approximate like “last week of August” or “August 31st”.

Also, I hope an improved Netflix app is on the way as well as a good media player like MPC or the like.
