Remote Relationships: The remote or the toothbrush?

After a long day, do you breathe a sigh of relief when you hit the couch and pick up your remote? If so, you’re not alone. According to our Global Remote Control Trends Study, people all over the world share a special relationship with their remote control. In fact, our survey revealed that more than a quarter (27 percent) of Americans would rather give up their toothbrush for an entire month than give up their remote control.

Across the globe, consumers show similar willingness to risk dental hygiene for the pleasure of having their remote in hand: 30% of Netherlands respondents, 28% of U.K. respondents, 25% of Australian respondents and 18% of French respondents also opted to give up their toothbrush for a month instead of their remote.

While sacrificing your toothbrush may sound extreme, it makes sense that people value their remote. We also found out that the majority of people around the world believe they personally “own” the remote in their home – which I’m sure has lead to many a battle for control over the TV.  With emotions running high when it comes to remotes, we take pride in our Harmony line of universal remotes, which provides consumers with simplicity they deserve no matter how complex their home entertainment system is.

  • Ho daddy, that’s the remote poll to end all remote polls. We get some pretty hardcore technophiles ordering from us every day, but I wouldn’t have guessed that so many would forego basic personal hygeine in favor of their remotes.
